(soccer) The Oklahoma soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season after recording a season-high goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Nicholls State on Friday night.

Sophomore Kelly Price tripled her career goals total with two scores and Renae Cuellar scored her team-leading third goal of the season.  It marked Price’s first appearance of the 2012 season and first goal since finding the back of the net against Missouri in 2011.

“She gave us some great energy off the bench,” said OU Head Coach Matt Potter.  “Her endeavor was rewarded tonight.  She had a couple good runs that put her on the score sheet, and that’s never a bad thing.”

The loss dropped Nicholls State to 1-2 on the season and the game marked the first meeting between the teams.

Cuellar gave OU a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, scoring her second goal of the season off a penalty kick.  Abby Hodgen created the opportunity and was brought down in the box by a Nicholls State defender.

The Sooners took a two-goal lead at the 35:52 mark as Price scored the first of two goals on the night, flicking the ball over a Colonel defender to clear some space before putting away the opportunity from 15 yards out.   Price later scored in the 76th minute as the Sooners went up 3-1 off an assist by Bailey Boulware.
Nicholls State got on the board in the 56th minute when the OU defense was unable to clear a loose ball that was collected by Spencer Valdespino and blasted past a diving Kelsey Devonshire in goal.  Devonshire improved to 2-1 with three saves on the night, while her counterpart, Amanda Boylson, allowed three goals and made six stops.

The Colonels nearly tied the game at two in the second half with 22 minutes left in regulation.  Nicholls State took their second corner kick and a header by Melissa Pestalozzi nearly found the back of the net off the far post, but defender Brianna Turang saved the potential game-tying goal.

OU tied a season high with 16 shots opposite Nicholls State’s seven on the night.  Cuellar led the Sooners with five blasts followed by Boulware, Price and Molly Richey with two apiece.

The Sooners conclude the current four-game homestand against Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Commodores hold a 1-0 advantage in the series after posting a 3-1 win in Nashville during the 2009 season.
