OU continues to roll through their home tourney this weeknd. Below is the latest press release from sooner sports.com …
– For the second time in as many matches, the Oklahoma women’s volleyball team (2-0) came away with a win, topping Western Michigan, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at McCasland Field House. The Sooners aim to make it 3-for-3 with a 7 p.m. date Saturday evening against Tulsa to cap the Nike Invitational.
Oklahoma dominated the first and third sets, and appeared to be on its way to doing so in between, as well. After taking the first set 25-13, OU jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the second stanza to force a WMU timeout. The Broncos scored seven of the next eight points and went toe-to-toe with OU the rest of the set, before the Sooners were able to prevail, 25-21.
After intermission, OU seized control and finished off WMU to move to 2-0 on the year. In the third and final set, the Sooners put together two impressive scoring runs where they tallied six and five consecutive points, respectively, to take home the matinee victory.
“We had a very good performance against a talented team,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We were really strong in the first set – everything was going well – our offense, our passing and our serving.”
Oklahoma was led by Morgan Reynolds for the second consecutive match as she posted a match-high 11 kills, while Julia Doyle racked up 32 of the Sooners’ 36 assists. Maria Fernanda tied for the match-lead with 17 digs.
Freshman Kierra Holst also inked an impressive performance with 11 kills.
OU will take to the court Saturday night against in-state foe Tulsa for the tournament title. The last time the two teams went head-to-head was in the 2011 NCAA Tournament First Round in Los Angeles, Calif., where Tulsa prevailed in a four-set match.
“It’s a huge rivalry,” explained Restrepo. “Obviously in the past two years, we have a split, so tonight will kind of be a tie breaker. It’s going to be exciting to see.”
