In the late 70’s, before he left Atlanta for New Orleans, Jim Henderson attended a career day at Tucker High School. It was my first discussion of any length with a sportscaster. He was encouraging and funny, realistic and matter of fact and over the years, when occasionally communicating with him as an industry colleague, I recounted his encouragement and the lessons learned.
In the attached article it may indicate Henderson is stepping away from a fight, but the truth is, he has repeatedly won the fight and has earned and secured the right to retire. I’m sure he would charge on if he were a young sportscaster, and I implore those who see his retirement to not consider it a white flag, butu a gold watch well deserved.
There is a place for the Jim Hendersons of the industry, then, now and in the future.
