Justin Krueger and Jon Matsumoto scored in the shootout to lift the Charlotte Checkers to a 3-2 win over the Barons on Sunday at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Gilbert Brule scored the Barons’ lone goal in the shootout as Oklahoma City fell to 1-2-0-1 against the Checkers . With the standing point from the shootout loss, the Barons took sole possession of first place by one point by virtue of a Houston loss to Rochester.
Oklahoma City never trailed until the end of the game, the first of a two-game set in Charlotte. The teams play again at 6 pm CST on Tuesday.
The Barons, 20-7-0-2, received 38 saves from David LeNeveu. After a scoreless first period, Oklahoma City scored first on Taylor Chorney’s third goal since re-joining the Barons at 6:39 of the second. Charlotte countered with a power play tally by Jerome Samson at 8:00.
Curtis Hamilton converted a cross-ice pass from Antti Tyrvainen at 14:32 of the third to give the Barons a 2-1 lead, but a minute and 25 seconds later Brett Bellemore tipped in a point shot to tie the score.
Mike Murphy made 21 saves in the win.
