Barons Continue Boom: League leading 15 wins

Tyler Pitlick scored a power play goal with 6:02 remaining in regulation to break a 4-4 tie and send the Barons to a 5-4 win on Sunday over the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Oklaahoma City built on its league-high win and standing point toals by improving to 15-5-0-1 and 31 points, three more than Houston in the West Division.

Grand Rapids falls to 7-11-1-0.

The Barons next play on Friday at home against San Antonio with a 7 pm faceoff.

Gilbert Brule led the Barons’ scoring with two goals and one assist as the Barons won their third in a row on this trip, which included a 3-1 win at Rockford on Saturday and another 5-4 tally in Grand Rapids on Friday.

The teams traded power play goals in the first period and Grand Rapids added an even-strength tally with 12.6 seconds left to take a 2-1 lead after one. Tomas Tatar opened the scoring at 5:07 of the first, picking up a rebound and putting it past Yann Danis. Brule countered with his seventh goal of the season, and fifth on the power play, when he converted a Tyler Pitlick centering pass at the goal mouth at 7:15.

Joakim Andersson drove to the net and pushed across the go-ahead goal late in the first at 19:47.

The Barons out-scored the Griffins 3-1 in the second period, as Brule tipped home a Dan Ringwald point shot at 7:00 to tie the game. Grand Rapids made it 3-2 in a rush by Landon Ferraro and a high glove side wrister at 15:14. Oklahoma City tied the game when Ryan Keller and Philippe Cornet traded passes and Keller scored past Jordan Pearce.

Ryan O’Marra gave the Barons a 4-3 lead at the second intermission when a centering pass ricocheted past Pearce at 18:24.

Jamie Johnson tied the game 4-4 at 1:48 of the third on a one-timer from the left circle set up by Gustav Nyquist.

Each team had a power play chance in the third, with the Barons converting the winner with Tomas Tatar in the box for holding.

Danis made 32 saves in improving to 10-4-0. Pearce made 16 saves to drop to 1-5-0.
